The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety just completed their survey of the "Safest Cars of 2010." The top awards may surprise some people, with Ford, Subaru and Volkswagen taking top prizes, while several foreign car makers including Toyota and Hyundai failed to place.
The Institute tests cars based on their read, front, side and rollover crash abilities and rates them on their safety performance.
Subaru was the big winner, take a prize in all 4 classes of vehicles with a total of 5 vehicles for 2010 ranked safety. Those categories include large cars, midsize cars, small cars, midsize SUVs and small SUVs.

Midsize cars
Audi A3, Chevrolet Malibu built after October 2009, the Chrysler Sebring 4-door with optional electronic stability control, Dodge Avenger with optional Electronic Stability Control, Mercedes C Class, Subaru Legacy, Subaru Outback, Volkswagen Jetta sedan, Volkswagen Passat sedan, the Volvo C30.
Small cars
Honda Civic 4-door models (except Si) with optional Electronic Stability Control, Seoul Kia, Nissan Cube, except Subaru Impreza WRX, Volkswagen Golf 4-door.
Midsize SUVs
Dodge Journey, Subaru Tribeca, Volvo XC60, Volvo XC90.
Small SUVs
Honda Element, Jeep Patriot with optional torso side airbags, Subaru Forester, Volkswagen Tiguan.
